Discover the Magic of the Night: Browns Canyon National Monument is Now a Dark Sky Park

If you’ve ever looked up at the night sky in Salida and caught your breath at the sight of a million stars overhead, you’re not alone—and now, there’s an official reason why it’s so spectacular. In December 2024, Browns Canyon National Monument earned the prestigious designation as a Certified Dark Sky Park by DarkSky International, making it the only one east of the Continental Divide not managed by the National Park System.

Just a short drive from Creekside Chalets, Browns Canyon now joins an elite group of global destinations celebrated for their breathtaking night skies. It’s one of the newest draws for visitors who want to reconnect with nature in its truest form—from daylight adventures to cosmic nightscapes.

Why Browns Canyon is a Stargazing Paradise

Thanks to its remote location, about 100 miles from the nearest large city and its high elevation (7,300 to 10,000 feet), and dry climate, Browns Canyon offers some of the clearest and darkest skies in Colorado. On a moonless night, you can see the Milky Way stretch across the sky, and if you look down, you might even catch your own shadow, cast by starlight alone. It’s that dark.

What truly sets this park apart is the collaborative conservation effort that made this Dark Sky designation possible. Spearheaded by Friends of Browns Canyon, the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, this partnership has ensured that the natural darkness of the canyon is protected and shared through public education and programming.

Stay Under the Stars at Creekside Chalets

To make your stargazing trip even more magical, Creekside Chalets now offers select campsites tucked along the trees and near the creek, perfect for a peaceful night under the stars after a day of exploring Browns Canyon. With low ambient light, a serene setting, and proximity to the Monument, it’s a prime location for stargazers who want to experience the wonders of the night sky without sacrificing comfort.

Our campsites are a dream for adventurers who want to get closer to nature while still enjoying convenient access to bathrooms, water, and fire pits. Whether you’re pitching a tent or parking a small camper, there’s no better way to soak up the starry views.

Prefer four walls and a fireplace? Our fully equipped, pet-friendly chalets with private hot tubs are just minutes away and offer the perfect basecamp for your daytime adventures and nighttime awe.

Best Time to Visit & What to Pack

May to November is the prime time to experience the full magic of Browns Canyon. Because of the elevation, nights are cool even in summer so pack layers, blankets, and a flashlight with a red lens to preserve your night vision. Cell service can be limited in the area, so be sure to download offline maps and stargazing apps in advance.
