Winter Guide to a Couple’s Getaway in the Colorado Mountains

February is a notoriously romantic time of year, and not just because of Valentine’s Day. The weather is perfect for snuggling up.  Plus, the snow somehow makes everything seem extra cozy. Whether it’s a hike through the pines or a stroll through historic downtown, the mid-winter vibe makes life magical.

The high country in Salida, Colorado is the perfect place to experience this warm, cozy getaway with your favorite person. Play in the snow, explore the historic town and enjoy a classic winter couples’ vacation.

Outdoor Adventures for Couples in Colorado

Getting out as a couple is a great way to feel connected to your natural surroundings…and each other. Monarch Mountain is just up the road from Salida, and very close to Creekside Chalets. This small ski area boasts all natural snow and a community feel. They’ve been in business since 1939 and the mountain is famous for their chill, local vibe. Added bonus: the two person lifts make for the perfect romantic ski date!

After your turns, share a plate of the famous nachos and a drink at the cozy Sidewinder Saloon. Pick out a table by the window and pass the time together as you watch the last of the skiers head down the slopes.

For the expert skiing couple that really loves to rip, treat each other to a day of Monarch Mountain Cat Skiing. The extreme terrain is perfect for experienced skiers. Monarch’s cat guides will take you on a tour of ridges and bowls only open to you and your crew. Perfect for a couple in the mood for a special, unforgettable day of adventure. (If you’re already a Monarch season pass holder, you’ll get 10% off your cat skiing and 10% off lodging at Creekside Chalets!)

Spending a day on a snowmobile with Monarch Snowmobile Tours is another excellent way to get quality time outside this winter. Couples can either ride double or have their own sled. These guided trips cover a variety of terrain–they will help you get the trip that’s right for you. If you have other couples looking to ride, pull together a group and ask about a trip just for your crew. Plus, Creekside Chalets guests receive 10% off a guided tour. (It pays to stay at the Chalets!)

If you’d prefer a quiet trek through nature, bring along your snowshoes and try one of the local trails. Old Monarch Pass is just up the road from Creekside Chalets. The hike takes you up to the Continental Divide where you can peer over into the valleys and mountains of the Western Slope. The approach is relatively gentle and great for first time snowshoers or old pros. If you don’t have your own, you can rent gear at Salida Mountain Sports in Downtown Salida.

The Perfect Salida, Colorado Couples’ Vacation

Just down the hill from Monarch Mountain and Creekside Chalets you’ll find the charming, historic town of Salida. Not only is this the largest historic district in the state of Colorado, it’s also one of the first official Colorado Creative Districts. These are areas recognized by the State of Colorado for their creativity, culture, and commitment to the arts. Strolling through the streets of Salida with that special someone feels magical.

For a special couples’ treat, stop into Riveting Experience Jewelry. In this hands-on maker’s space, you can create custom made jewelry for yourself, or for each other. They serve beer and wine to sip as you style your own unique pieces.

Across the Arkansas River from downtown you’ll find a series of trails, some right along the river. A hike up to Duke’s Grave, a former railroad dog, is short and provides a great view of town. If you’re in for a longer hike, you can make it up to the top of Spiral Drive, the road leading up Tenderfoot Mountain (known locally as “S Mountain” due to the S on the side of the hill).

If you’re feeling like a cozy moment together, or even if you’re in a group of couples looking for some fun, there are plenty of restaurants and bars right in the three block downtown radius.

The Soggy Surfer has  a covered outdoor patio with a firepit running most days. Even on a cold winter afternoon, this space feels like a nice place to sit and enjoy the fire, with views of the park right across F Street. There’s a window serving drinks and slices of pizza from Pizza Rio upstairs, and Chill Ice Cream is right off the patio if you’re in the mood for a treat.

The Velveteen’s unique vibe might make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, with soft couches and chairs surrounded by retro, vintage decor curated by the creative owners. It’s a one of a kind lounge with delicious cocktails and the perfect place for a couple to snuggle up and get lost in a crowd. They are open Thursday-Saturday and, in warmer months, a food truck is often set up in the backdoor courtyard.

The Biker and the Baker’s sleek style and delicious, upscale cocktails feel special. The space takes up the second and third floor of a historic building and the sunset views are excellent. Even if it’s chilly, the rooftop deck is worth a peak and a quiet moment.

Another do not miss at The Biker and the Baker is dessert. The baked goods are truly transcendent. Biker and the Baker is owned by the same couple operating Sweetie’s downstairs, so all desserts are made in-house daily. It’s a great spot for a sunset cocktail or an after dinner dessert.

Wood’s Distillery serves unique cocktails, but that’s not the only thing that makes the space special. Couples can find a few nooks to settle into, or groups can take up the big table in the middle. Explore the menu and talk to your mixologist–this isn’t your average drink.

Hot Springs Adventures for Couples near Salida, CO

For the ultimate in romance, visit one of our area’s famous hot springs. Creekside Chalets sits right in the middle of a variety of hot springs options, some here in Chaffee County and some in the San Luis Valley over Poncha Pass. Our location makes it easy to find the perfect hot springs.

The most popular option in Chaffee County is Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort. This world class resort and spa is just up the road between Salida and Buena Vista. Try the infinity pool during the day and at sunset for a stunning view of the Chalk Cliffs. These white cliffs sit at the base of Mt. Princeton, one of the prominent 14ers in the region. They also have an adult only area with small soaking pools, perfect for a romantic getaway.

Over in the San Luis Valley you’ll find a variety of hot springs. The closest is Joyful Journey, a relaxing, new age space. The outdoor hot pools are fed by local springs and have vast views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. They offer spa treatments and a holistic, spiritual vibe.

The Greenhouse at Hooper Pool is a bit further but worth the drive, especially for plant and flower lovers. This indoor space erupts with blooms and foliage even in the depths of winter, making a beautiful contrast to the wide open space of the San Luis Valley. Their bar and grill also serves better food and drinks than you’d ever expect from such a remote location.
